How to Plan a Photoshoot in NYC Without a Studio

In New York City, the streets are your studio. From the brownstones of Brooklyn to the industrial edges of Long Island City, NYC is packed with character, energy, and texture no four walls required.

Whether you're a fashion brand, model, or creative team, knowing how to plan a professional outdoor or on-location photoshoot in NYC can save budget, boost creativity, and deliver visuals that feel raw, editorial, and real.

As an NYC-based fashion photographer who’s created dozens of successful campaigns without ever stepping into a studio, here’s how I do it—and how you can too.

1. Scout NYC Locations That Match Your Brand’s Aesthetic

Your location choice is everything. New York offers infinite vibes:

  • SoHo: Elegant, clean lines, upscale-casual

  • DUMBO: Urban grit with skyline views

  • Central Park: Romantic, natural, iconic

  • West Village: Soft light, charming details

  • Coney Island: Bold color, retro energy

Think of your location as your set design—it tells half the story.

2. Timing is Everything: Light + Logistics

In outdoor shoots, lighting is your most powerful tool. Plan for:

  • Golden hour (1 hour after sunrise or before sunset) for soft, flattering tones.

  • Mid-morning if you're shooting vibrant, colorful streetwear content.

  • Overcast days (yes, we love them!) for skincare or beauty work where you want to reduce harsh shadows.

3. Bring a Mobile Creative Team

When you're not in a studio, you need a mobile glam squad. I always work with stylists and MUAs who know how to:

  • Touch up on the go

  • Use portable lighting and reflectors

  • Carry backup looks in garment bags

4. Have a Plan B (Because NYC Weather is Drama)

Even the best-laid plans can get rained out. I recommend:

  • Covered outdoor spaces like The Oculus or Dumbo Archway

  • Hotel lobbies or rooftops (with permission)

  • Cafe corners or boutique interiors (great for lifestyle brands)

And yes, clear umbrellas are a vibe. Some of my most striking photos happened in the rain.

5. Pack Smart: Essentials for Non-Studio Shoots

Don’t overpack, but never underprepare. Must-haves:

  • Portable reflectors/diffusers

  • Extra batteries + memory cards

  • Folding stool or stool box

  • Lint roller (NYC wind will find lint)

  • Gaffer tape, safety pins, and backup makeup

Real Talk: Why I Love Non-Studio Shoots

Some of my favorite work was shot with zero rental fees, no artificial lighting, and just the NYC skyline in the background. Without the boundaries of a studio, the work becomes more spontaneous, more real, more New York.

That’s the magic I aim to bring to every project.
